Welcome to the ML Library Summer Makerspace Camp Page!
This summer we have five amazing weeks of camp planned. Campers can select which weeks they would like to attend. During each camp week there is a theme that a camper can work on individually or with a friend. Campers will have ten hours during the week! to learn, explore, and create either many small projects or one big project that they will showcase at the end of the camp week.
ML Makerspace Camp is all about fun, exploring, and being creative. For example, during our ‘Games’ themed week, if a camper has an interest in Pinball, they can research and create a working cardboard pinball machine, complete with mechanics and a programmable scoring display.
Camp size each week is small. There will be a maximum of six campers. Ian Matty is the lead instructor and supervisor. Assisting Ian will be two High School / College students, making the camper to instructor ratio at most 2:1.
Each camp week runs Monday through Thursday, from 9:00 am – 11:30 am. We will provide daily snack and a design journal. We will also spend time working on projects in the ML Public Library garden area. Parents provide transportation.

Green Screen Week
Week 1 - Green Screen Filmmaking
Everyone loves the Green Screen. Do kids love movies? Sure they do! All movies, whether they are action packed like Marvel or Star Wars or a silly comedy use green screens. Campers will learn and explore green screening, digital movie making, and vector graphic animation. Then campers will design their own movies, complete with props and digital movie techniques which we will view on Thursday July 8th at 11 am!
Robotic Snake Created by Kindergartners
Week 2 - Robotic Petting Zoo
Campers will learn and explore robotics and programming with the Hummingbird Robotics kit and micro:bit. Both resources are standards for teaching students robotics. The best part of these robotics resources is they are meant to be designed with all types of crafting materials. Campers will design their own robotic penguin or maybe a penguin / uncicorn / puppy. Campers will learn how mechanisms, servos, and motors work. The design is all their own! [Please note that the robotics equipment is NOT to take home]
Custom Designed Mars Rover
Week 3 - Space!
Campers will learn about space and apply their knowledge into creating many different projects. We will work on creating our own giant sized, cardboard working planetarium. Campers can create rovers to explore distant planets. Campers can learn to use TinkerCad to design their own mars rover or print their own planetary system. All campers have access to our green screen animation and filming resources. Campers can create a movie about being the first kids in outterspace.
Week 4 - Art Bots!
Art, robotics, and programming are a fun, educational, and very creative combination. Students will get to explore art by drawing and painting with different robots such as Spheros and Wonder Dash. Students will also create and program their own art bots by learning about and using motors, servos, and mechanisms. Students may also learn to program their own version of Etch a Sketch on Scratch.
